Heart Valve Surgery Now Possible Through Small Cuts: Health Experts

During an event hosted by Ivy Hospital to raise public awareness, various medical professionals noted that heart valve surgery is the second most common heart procedure after a bypass surgery. According to the experts, heart valve issues can be brought on by a variety of factors, including congenital abnormalities, infections, and advanced age.

 

According to Dr. Pankaj Goel, head heart surgeon at Ivy Hospital, There are numerous public misconceptions about heart valve surgery. He added that patients typically experience palpitations or a developing shortness of breath, but that rheumatic heart disease still remains the most common cause. He said that while the early stages are handled with medications, heart valve surgery is eventually necessary.

 

In accordance with the extent of the damage, he continued, the valve might be replaced or fixed during a procedure. Dr. Goel further emphasized that only a few incisions are now required for valve surgery.
